China and India Lead the Way in Greening (NASA)
The research team found that global green leaf area has increased by 5 percent since the early 2000s, an area equivalent to all of the Amazon rainforests. At least 25 percent of that gain came in China. Overall, one-third of Earth’s vegetated lands are greening, while 5 percent are growing browner."
China and India lead in greening of the world through land-use management (NATURE)
China alone accounts for 25% of the global net increase in leaf area with only 6.6% of global vegetated area. The greening in China is from forests (42%) and croplands (32%), but in India is mostly from croplands (82%) with minor contribution from forests (4.4%). China is engineering ambitious programmes to conserve and expand forests with the goal of mitigating land degradation, air pollution and climate change."
Earth’s green patches become greener — and China is leading the way (NATURE)
Despite the loss of vast tracts of tropical forest, Earth has grown markedly greener since the turn of the millennium — with the most profound changes seen in China and India."

CHINESE CONSTITUTION
“Ecological civilization" in the Chinese Constitution (2018):
PREAMBLE - (...) apply a new vision of development, and work hard and self-reliantly to modernize the country’s industry, agriculture, national defense, and science and technology step by step, to promote the coordinated development of the material, political, spiritual, social, and ecological civilizations, to turn China into a strong modern socialist country that is prosperous, democratic, culturally advanced, harmonious, and beautiful, and to realize the great rejuvenation for the Chinese nation."
"ARTICLE 26 - The State protects and improves the living environment and the ecological environment, and prevents and controls pollution and other public hazards. The State organizes and encourages afforestation and the protection of forests."
"ARTICLE 89, Point 6 - To direct and administer economic affairs and urban and rural development, as well as the building of an ecological civilization;"

INTERNATIONAL COMMITMENTS
China did make significant domestic commitments on climate change. In September 2009, in the run-up to Copenhagen, China pledged to increase the share of non-fossil energy – hydropower, nuclear power, and renewables including wind and solar – to around 15 percent of its energy mix by 2020. That November, the State Council announced that carbon intensity (CO2 emissions per unit of GDP) would be reduced by 40–45 percent below 2005 levels by 2020. The fact that China made these highprofile voluntary commitments, however, did not mean that it was prepared to accept a legally binding climate treaty. On the contrary, these domestic commitments bolstered the country’s argument that it was already doing its part and therefore need not be subject to international obligations."
"Coal’s share in China’s power generation dropped from 80 percent in 2010 to 60 percent in 2017. Between 2013 and 2017, coal consumption was reduced by 380 million tons. By the end of 2017, carbon intensity had fallen by 47 percent below 2005 levels, meeting the 2020 Copenhagen carbon intensity reduction target three years ahead of schedule. Some Chinese experts believe that China’s carbon emissions are still on track to peak as early as 2020, ten years ahead of its Paris pledge."
"With this unprecedented surge in new solar plants, China brought its total installed capacity to over 130 GW in 2017, surpassing its 2020 solar PV target of 105 GW three years ahead of schedule. The NEA responded by setting new annual targets that together more than double China’s previous 2020 target."

Reforestation Ranking (more here, here)
Forest Landscape Integrity (more here)
The Forest Landscape Integrity Index is an annual global index of forest condition measured by the degree of anthropogenic modification. (Read more on Wikipedia and Nature magazine).
China, often mentioned in the West as a "bad example", has very high levels of forest landscape integrity and ranks higher than most Western/developed nations, only seconded by Canada, Macedonia, and Australia. Actually, most Western nations have extremely low scores and show up at the very bottom of the world ranking:
CO2 Emissions per Capita
Per capita CO2 Emissions by fuel type
Oil Consumption by Country per capita

The science was agreed in 1992 but US emissions didn't peak until 2007. Why? Was the US a developing country? Did other countries export manufacturing to the US? Was there a massive infrastructure rollout? Poverty alleviation? Or did this destruction fuel luxury and profiteering? pic.twitter.com/2bGn8x8AZA
